So long, farewell, auf wiedersehen, goodbye

I hope everyone is enjoying the sun, and those of you who attended the Summer Social Weekender have fully recovered.

This weekend, was our last ever Shabang as Leicester undergraduates. It’s sad to be leaving but it’s exciting to be moving towards the next chapter of our lives. Since finishing our Masters project presentation, we have continually reminisced over our time together. Remembering back to the time in Freshers when I first met people on my course who I now call my best friends. It’s been a phenomenal experience and the best decision of my life so far.

The graduation attire has been ordered and my next job is to find the perfect shoes! It’s strange waking up in the morning and realising you have no work to do and your biggest challenge of the day is browsing websites for shoes.

I’ve been advised by many to take a well deserved rest over summer before the hard work that accompanies a PhD begins! I’m enjoying catching up on Netflix (who knew Homeland would be this intense?!) which has been neglected due to my studies. I’m heading to Portugal with my course friends on Monday which will consist of the beach and copious amounts of Sangria. We decided to go out with a bang before our tenancy is up at the end of the month. In a few weeks we will be dispersing back to our family homes in Dorset, Somerset, London and Nottingham, which is going to be extremely sad.

It’s true what they say, your university friends will be your friends for life. I’ve been very lucky to meet a great bunch of people and grow with them throughout our four years together. I can guarantee it won’t be long until our geology cohort comes together again, any excuse for a party. I’m incredibly envious of those pursuing a geology degree at Leicester in the coming months as I’d love to relive my time again!

To map or not to map?

The most recent Geoscientist published for February 2014, included a double-paged spread featuring reader’s letters.  The topic in hand from many readers was the role of fieldwork mapping which came about after Desmond Donovan questioned whether it was needed in the UK at all. Isle of Arran fieldwork group In agreeance with Andy Howard, who made the relevant point that mapping is actually a skill – despite the fact that it produces new up-to-date geologically relevant maps, is that it allows for an undergraduate like me, to question why a geologist interpreted a geological structure the way they did. It allows me to critically analyse someone else’s interpretation when I’m in the field and not to be afraid if I had a different view. Ultimately, as field maps are replaced and areas are becoming more detailed, the skill of mapping should be encouraged as the new map itself is just a by-product of one’s learning. Festival of Careers 2013 Preparation

Today I went to a session at university regarding being prepped for the Festival of Careers 2013. Having gone to a prep session last year, I was disappointed to see no Geology companies. Having listened to feedback, this year CGG will be visiting the University of Leicester on 7 th November on the Engineering, Science and IT day. Today I have learnt that there are 400,000 graduates from UK universities every year. I was quite surprised to hear that for every graduate role, a company receives on average 85 applications. Whether or not 85 had the desired qualities, this still shows the competitiveness graduates are now facing and how it is vital to now stand out in a crowd. My objectives of attending the careers festival this year will be primarily to make contacts with companies that appeal to my interests – I will primarily be researching the geological companies first, but will keep my horizons open as I never know what the future entails.
