Impact on my Future Employability - My online CV
"Having searched Google, I didn't find myself. I thought I would have a digital footprint, as being a regular Facebook and Twitter user. After searching on www.123people.com, there are obviously other Jo Miles's in the world that have a greater presence online than me as I couldn't find myself on this website either. Although what did surprise me was that two of my best friends were in the 'Related People' section.
Whether Jo Miles is a common name or not, I'd like to think I have an active presence online, but from this exercise I can see that I need to take advantage of social media to heighten my digital footprint further and actually be found when searched for by employers.”
I wrote this at the beginning of the course and initially I was hoping to have a digital footprint by the end of the course. I searched for myself again on www.123people.com and although I did not come up on Facebook or Twitter again, I was pleasantly surprised to see my blog was the top search for my name.
Even though we have not come to the end of the course just yet, I feel as though there has been some success. Not only has this been a learning curve, I feel as though I know myself a bit better too. I feel as though I know what my employer is looking for and hopefully I will begin to portray this as I become a confident and regular blogger. This practice will improve my written communication, not only for my target audience of my blog, but for a variety of audiences. Although my LinkedIn page is still not complete, I feel as though I have learnt the basis upon what will make my profile successful through what I have learnt through this course. I have begun to follow companies whom I one day hope to work for, as well as view fellow Geology students to analyse how they portray themselves on the internet and what works for them as they become professionals in their field of work.
I would like to continue to build on my personal development through social media, continuing to be active on my blog, my Geology twitter and to finish and have a professional profile on LinkedIn. Eventually I aim to make contacts with individuals in companies whom may offer me some assistance. This will open up opportunities to me, keep me well informed regarding subject news and broaden my interests academically further. I aim to also begin to investigating social bookmarking sites such as Pinterest, which will enhance my digital footprint, whereby I will have a network of social sites which would help to portray me as a sensible, reliable and keen Geology undergraduate with a passion not only in textbook Geology but get-your-hands-muddy fieldwork too.
